Long Range Multi-Modal Transportation Plan (2007-2035)The Long Range Multi-Modal Transportation Plan is the transportation vision for the community in the same way a comprehensive plan is the land use vision for a municipality. A comprehensive plan provides the basis for subsequent zoning and subdivision laws in a municipality, and the long range transportation plan should provide a similar basis for the programming of projects for all modes of transportation. The Johnson County Council of Governments (JCCOG), as Metropolitan Planning Organization* (MPO) for the Iowa City Urbanized Area, is responsible for fulfilling the federal requirement mandating development of the long range multi-modal transportation plan. The long range plan represents all municipalities in JCCOG’s long range planning area. The plan is comprehensive and includes all modes of surface transportation which receive federal and state funding. It coordinates transportation issues between adjacent municipalities and attempts to resolve conflicting perspectives. The plan is continuing to evolve with each 5-year update and changing community priorities. Each update of the Long Range Multi-Modal Transportation Plan involves
an extensive public involvement process that ensures citizens have the
opportunity to comment on the provisions of the proposed plan. The long
range plan reflects priorities for the community that are translated
into politically viable and financially reasonable transportation projects. If
